The Iowa Department of Transportation was forced to explain that “deer can’t read” — after Hawkeye Staters kept asking why it doesn’t put “deer crossing” signs in places that are safer for the mammals to trot over the road.
“We actually get this question on a pretty regular basis,” the agency wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
“Deer can’t read signs. Drivers can. This sign isn’t intended to tell deer where to cross, it’s for drivers to be alert that deer have been in this area in the past.”
Most animal collisions in Iowa happen during fall, according to the Des Moines Register.
Iowans have a 1 in 69 chance of colliding with a deer — the fourth highest odds in the country, according to State Farm Insurance.
