AMY CARTER SET TO BE SEPTEMBER BRIDE

Amy Carter, best remembered as Jimmy Carter's little girl at the White House, is getting married.

The 28-year-old daughter of the former president will marry James Wentzel, a 27-year-old computer consultant, in a ceremony next month.

"She's very nice, very smart," said Wentzel's father, who is also named James and lives in Herndon. "They seem to get along very well."

The romance first blossomed at Chapter Eleven, an Atlanta bookstore. Wentzel, an English major who graduated from Villanova in 1990, worked there as a manager and Carter was a part-time employee.

The couple have been dating for about two years and currently live together in New Orleans, but could not be reached for comment yesterday. Carter is studying for a master's degree in art history at Tulane University and Wentzel works at the University of New Orleans.

The two became engaged about six weeks ago, said Wentzel's father, who is retired from Mobil Oil. "We've been anticipating it," he said. "But we didn't know the timing."

The groom-to-be, the eldest of four children, grew up in Princeton Junction, N.J. His parents moved to Herndon seven years ago and the couple spent the July Fourth holiday visiting his family here. "She's so down-to-earth," said Wentzel. "She makes everybody feel right at home."

The youngest child and only daughter of the former president was not sporting an engagement ring during the July visit. Carter was engaged once before, to Michael Antonucci, a classmate from Brown University.

The Wentzel family has not yet met Jimmy Carter or his wife, Rosalynn. That meeting, said Wentzel, will come at the wedding. Details of the ceremony have not been released, but it is likely to be small and low-key, following Amy Carter's well-known dislike for the spotlight.

"She is still quite a private person." CAPTION: Engaged personality: Amy Carter, in Washington last year to sign copies of the children's book she collaborated on with her father.
